Challenge 7

Challenge 7: How can we transform cultural diversity into valuable resources at home?

Diversity is a word that can be interpreted in many different ways. One thing is for sure : being diverse is a good accessory due to the world becoming closer and closer.

We started class by mixing nationalities in groups of four.

Our goal for the agenda:
- understand key concepts related to cultural diversity
- classify multicultural learning environments using James Bank's model
- argue own viewpoint on how and why to establish multicultural learning environments for children
- use teaching methods designed for multicultural learning environment

Each group were given a picture with animal creatures (monkeys) on but there was 1 who looked different from the other three. There was an empty bubble that we had fill with what we thought they said.

My group guessed: ''What kind of creature is that!?''

The real writing in the bubble was something like this: ''I am sorry George but you are too different we cannot accept you''

It is a teachers responsibility to include each and every student despite their differences. The students HAVE to have a working-relationship and that does not mean that they have to have a friendship

We saw a short movie called ''New Boy''

Questions to the short movie :

1) What does this have to do with diversity?
- the pupils seemed to have a lack of knowledge on diversity in cultural matters. Some students seemed to have created a certain wall in between the boy.
- diversity in an intelectual matter - the kid who couldn't solve the math task on the board, the geek (girl), though guy, kids life in africa - way of teaching, way of behavior,

2) old-fashioned and not able teach in inspirational and motivating way

3) What could the teacher have done ?

- the teacher should have let the new kid introduced him self.
- make a project about africa before he arrived
- should have let the children asked him questions
